Modeling the effects of alternative crop–livestock management scenarios on important ecosystem services for smallholder farming from a landscape perspective

چکیده

Abstract. Smallholder farming systems in southern Africa are characterized by low-input management and integrated livestock crop production. Low yields dry-season feed shortages common. To meet growing food demands, sustainable intensification (SI) of these is an important policy goal. While mixed crop–livestock may offer greater productivity, it implies trade-offs between supply, soil nutrient replenishment, carbon accumulation, other ecosystem functions (ESFs) services (ESSs). Such settings require a detailed system understanding to assess the performance prevalent practices identify potential SI strategies. Models can evaluate different scenarios on extensive spatiotemporal scales help suitable Here, we linked process-based models APSIM (Agricultural Production Systems sIMulator) for cropland aDGVM2 (Adaptive Dynamic Global Vegetation Model) rangeland investigate effects (i) current (minimum input agriculture), (ii) scenario production (with grazing), (iii) with separated (livestock exclusion from cropland) two representative villages Limpopo Province, South Africa, period 2000 2010. We focused following ESFs ESSs provided rangeland: yield provision, storage, leaf area index (LAI), water. Village surveys informed practices, livelihood conditions, environmental circumstances. found that modest measures (small fertilizer quantities, weeding, rotation) led moderate increases factor 1.2 1.6 reduced loss, but they sometimes caused increased growing-season water limitation effects. Thus, strongly varied years. Modeling landscape net ecosystem productivity (LandNEP) under alternative management regimes

Forests have been considered as a major carbon sink within the global carbon budget. However, a fragmented forest landscape varies significantly in its composition and age structure, and the amount of carbon sequestered at this level remains generally unknown to the scientific community. More precisely, the temporal dynamics and spatial distribution of net ecosystem productivity (NEP) in a mosa...

Effects of organic farming on biodiversity and ecosystem services: taking landscape complexity into account.

The recent intensification of the arable landscape by modern agriculture has had negative effects on biodiversity. Organic farming has been introduced to mitigate negative effects, but is organic farming beneficial to biodiversity? In this review, we summarize recent research on the effects of organic farming on arable biodiversity of plants, arthropods, soil biota, birds, and mammals. The ecos...

Forest management scenarios and their effects on ecosystem services: some analytical results from Sweden

Sweden has just more than 23 million hectares of productive forest, which has been actively managed for more than 100 years. This has led to one of the recognized forest products exporting country. Despite the vital role of forests in providing forest products in sustaining various human needs, there is an increasing demand for the inclusion of ecosystem services in forest planning decision mak...
